Built
A Flexible, Forward-thinking Environment
The building design was shaped by a dual imperative: meet the rigorous standards set by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) and create a forward-looking academic environment that reflects the university’s mission and strengthens its urban presence.
The design solution maximized the use of existing campus assets by renovating and repurposing facilities for gross anatomy, a medical library, and large classrooms/event spaces. Distributing essential program elements across the campus formed a cohesive healthcare education precinct, reinforcing Duquesne’s commitment to interdisciplinary learning and connectivity.
New construction was designed in tandem with accreditation criteria. Spaces were carefully planned to meet student-to-space ratios and faculty support needs, with internal COCA-readiness reviews conducted throughout the process to align design milestones with accreditation site visits. By embedding compliance into every phase, the facility was delivered both on time and fully prepared to support the enrollment of Duquesne’s inaugural medical cohort.
The design incorporates a virtual anatomy lab, simulation suites, and versatile learning spaces that support active engagement, all while maintaining a commitment to sustainability through energy-efficient systems and eco-friendly materials.
“Through advanced simulation, augmented reality anatomy labs and other technologies, we will ensure that our students receive exceptional training. Our doctors will be trained to very high standards of medical excellence and will understand and meet the healthcare needs of their patients, including those living in underserved regions.”
