Wilmington VA Medical Center, Administrative Building
Serving as prime contractor, AE Works delivered full A/E services for a new two-story, 23,500-SF administrative building at the Wilmington VA Medical Center campus.
Designed to centralize several administrative departments, the modern facility incorporates a 100-space parking lot, sidewalks, electric car recharging stations, green roof, and biofiltration plantings. Site work included demolishing existing Buildings 2, 3, and 4 along with their associated utilities.

Designing for Adaptability, Security, and Long-Term Operations
Collaboration guided the early stages, as our multidisciplinary A/E team conducted site analysis, programming, and conceptual modeling to optimize building massing, orientation, and spatial layout. Pre-demolition environmental testing identified hazardous materials within the existing structures to ensure safe removal.
Because stormwater runs to a single outfall near an adjacent floodplain, engineers designed specialized Erosion and Sediment Control (ESC) systems compliant with Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) standards. Visually, exposed structural elements and clean lines establish an industrial aesthetic, while MEP teams integrated solar arrays, high-efficiency HVAC, and smart lighting.

Adaptability drives the interior layout, where modular demountable partitions and folding walls, allow quick, low-cost reconfigurations as department needs evolve. Facility safety complies fully with VA Force Protection, access control, and Mission Critical Security Standards.
