Approach
As this project is for a 24/7 hospital campus, the design needed to accommodate the critical continuous supply of steam for the medical center’s sterilization of instruments, building heating, and hot water processing.
To meet project budget and operational goals, a study was completed to analyze existing boiler and chiller capacity and future needs. Options were evaluated for facility replacement and upgrades. Due to the existing facility’s physical site constraints, the considerable space needs for the Boiler Plant, and the need to maintain continuous plant operation in supplying steam to the facility, multiple design options were developed.
The final design solution constructs a 8,000-SF new/expanded boiler plant, new control room, and ‘shell space’ addition for a future chiller plant. A phasing plan was developed to maintain operations and minimize impact.
Impact
This project also involved planning for an anticipated chiller plant. Without benefit of known equipment selection, sizes, loading or determinable MEP requirements, our team included the design of a shell space area for a future chiller plant upgrade.
